German Mock Election

In many ways, the German mock election served as a spectacular way of informing the class of how the democratic doctrines are practiced in a state that uses various voting processes. Though the electoral process proved to be an effective way in selectiing officials, the process of forming coalitions demonstrated how complicated an organized goverment actually is. From participating in the German mock elections, the class was able to conclude that the process of forming an effective coalition can take weeks or months because of the constant negotiations between the present parties. Also, it was very interesting to witness how the Free Democratic Party was not able to form coalitions with political parties that they historically were able to coincide with. The Free Democratic Party served as a prime example of how political parties are able to negotiate with other political parties that they are not historically compatible with. From compromising and using diplomacy, the results of forming a coalition by using a democratic process can be unpredictable because every party have many similar and dissimilar desires and needs.

In relation to our topic, democracy plays a great part in the motives on why the United States is currently spending more money in Iraq than they spent in Germany. Essentially, America is currently using a great deal of America’s funds in Iraq because according to President Bush, the state would set a democratic example. With democracy in Iraq as an example, a reverse domino effect would occur and other states would follow Iraq‘s democratic example. The theory is that when other non-democratic countries in the area see progress and development in Iraq, they will attribute it to the new democracy and also convert wishing to obtain the same success. With democracy established in the Middle Eastern region, a liberal influence would be present and conflict between the Middle Eastern states would seize to exist. With democratic regimes the counties would be easier to negotiate and cooperate with, benefiting the United States in foreign relations. Therefore although the spending in Iraq has become very high, it is important to establish a strong democracy there because it is the model country, and according the the reverse domino theory it will set the trend for the others.

The money spent in Iraq surpassed the money spent in Germany after WWII because America has a belief in making rational decisions of preserving democracy and the U.S. economy. The rational theory explains that states act out of their own self interest. It is profitable to preserve the U.S ecomony by importing Iraqi oil. Therefore they are willing to spend more money in stabalizing Iraq because of long term economic benefits. Also, according to the liberal theory, if two countries are liberal and democratic, the chance of conflict is eliminated and economic dependency occurs.

We will compare the finacial foreign aid given by the United States in foreign countries. Financial aid in Iraq is very high in comparisson to any other counited aided by the United States in the past. However, their success in rebuilding the country has not been a representative of the money spent. In comparrison, although America spent a great deal of money to help rebuild Germany after World War II, the total was not nearly as high, and was also more successful.
